Chapter 3 - The Cruel Insult

Vance’s jaw clenched so hard his teeth nearly cracked. He couldn't believe a minimum-wage waiter was actually talking back to him in front of the city's billionaires.

"You aren't assisting anyone, you insolent brat," Vance growled, leaning in aggressively. "You are embarrassing this entire establishment! We do not fraternize with the guests! Especially not the charity cases!"

Audrey flinched physically, tears immediately welling in her eyes.

Vance glared down at the woman in the blue sequined dress, his face twisting in pure, toxic disgust. "I don't even know how a cripple got past security tonight. This is a five-thousand-dollar-a-plate charity gala. Wheelchairs belong in the back of the room, not on my pristine dance floor."

The elite guests standing nearby gasped, but nobody stepped forward to defend the disabled woman. They simply watched the brutal humiliation unfold like it was a theater performance.

Harlan stopped breathing. The air in his lungs violently turned to absolute ice.

He looked at the tears falling down Audrey’s cheeks. She had spent the entire night sitting alone in a dark corner, completely ignored by the wealthy crowd, until Harlan had finally asked her to dance.

The cinematic realism of Harlan’s total restraint was infinitely more terrifying than a screaming match.

He didn't punch the manager. He didn't yell.
