Chapter 1 - The Heel on the Marble

The heavy oak doors of the Voss mansion swung open, but the sound was completely drowned out by a child’s muffled, agonizing cries. Evelyn froze in the grand entryway. The morning sun poured through the massive floor-to-ceiling windows, casting a pristine, golden glow over the imported Italian marble floors. But the beauty of the room was entirely shattered by the sickening scene playing out in the center of it.

Evelyn’s breath caught in her throat. Her heart stopped.

There, kneeling on the cold floor in dirty pink pajamas, was Lily. Her five-year-old daughter. Lily was trembling uncontrollably, her tiny shoulders shaking as she clutched a wet scrubbing sponge.

Standing directly above the weeping child was Vanessa. The mafia boss’s newest mistress wore a rich, flowing maroon silk robe that draped elegantly over her flawless figure. In one hand, she lazily swirled a crystal glass of expensive champagne. But it was her feet that made Evelyn’s blood run instantly ice-cold.

Vanessa was wearing razor-sharp red high heels. And the sharp, pointed heel of her right shoe was pressed deliberately, cruelly, right onto the back of Lily’s tiny, fragile hand.

Vanessa took a slow sip of her champagne, her face a mask of supreme arrogance. She looked down at the sobbing five-year-old with utter disgust.

"Scrub harder," Vanessa said, her voice casual, mocking, and devoid of a single ounce of human empathy. "You ruined my dress, you little thing."

Evelyn’s vision tunneled. For three agonizing months, she had been forced to leave her daughter hidden in the servant’s quarters while she went completely dark for an undercover operation. She had played the part of the invisible, submissive maid perfectly to infiltrate the Voss syndicate. But in this split second, the maid was gone. The highly trained, lethal undercover agent woke up.
