Chapter 7 - The Lethal Silence

Vanessa frowned, deeply confused by Damian’s trembling voice. "Wait? What do you mean, wait? Damian, she assaulted me! I want her gone right now!"
Damian ignored Vanessa completely. His eyes slowly drifted down. Past Evelyn’s protective stance. Past the dirty pink pajamas.
His gaze landed squarely on Lily’s tiny, trembling hand.
The bright red, crescent-shaped welt on the child’s pale skin was impossible to miss. It was the exact size and shape of a stiletto heel.
The air in the room vanished. Damian stopped breathing. The silence that filled the luxurious mansion wasn't just quiet; it was heavy, lethal, and utterly suffocating.
He slowly turned his head to look at Vanessa’s feet. He saw the red high heels.
A wave of pure, unadulterated panic washed over the mafia boss. It wasn't just that Evelyn was a legendary, highly lethal federal agent who could send him to prison for life. It was worse. Much, much worse.
Vanessa, his arrogant, empty-headed mistress, had just physically tortured the five-year-old daughter of the most dangerous woman on the eastern seaboard.
Damian looked back up at Evelyn. The mother’s face was perfectly still. But in her eyes, Damian saw a promise of absolute, merciless violence. He knew in that singular, agonizing second that if he made the wrong move, if he defended Vanessa for even a fraction of a heartbeat, Evelyn would kill him right there on the marble floor.
