Chapter 5 - A Fatal Miscalculation

Vanessa, completely oblivious to the silent, electrifying tension vibrating between Damian and Evelyn, continued her performance. She gestured dramatically with her champagne glass toward the mother and daughter still huddled on the floor.
"This child ruined my brand new silk dress with her filthy hands," Vanessa complained, pouting her lips. "And when I disciplined her, this... maid had the nerve to attack me. She practically threw me across the room!"
Evelyn slowly rose to her feet. She carefully tucked Lily behind her legs, shielding the little girl from Damian's view. Evelyn’s hands hung loosely by her sides. To an untrained eye, she looked like a defeated servant. But Damian was not untrained. He recognized a fighter’s stance. He recognized the subtle shift in weight, the slow, controlled breathing of someone preparing to snap a neck.
Vanessa laughed lightly, a cruel, ringing sound that echoed off the marble walls. She pointed a perfectly manicured finger directly at Evelyn’s chest.
"Damian, tell this maid her place," Vanessa demanded, her voice dripping with venomous privilege. "She thinks she can talk to me like that. Have your men take her out back. Throw them both on the street. Or better yet, teach her a lesson she won't forget."
Vanessa waited for Damian to snap his fingers. She waited for his heavily armed guards to rush in and drag the pathetic, crying mother away. She waited for the ultimate validation of her power in the Voss mansion.
But Damian didn't move. He didn't call the guards. He didn't even blink.

A slow, terrifying realization began to dawn on Vanessa. Damian’s muscular arm, which she was still holding onto, had gone completely rigid. He felt like a statue carved from solid ice.
👉 Vanessa had just signed her own death warrant, and she was the only one in the room who didn’t know it yet.
