Chapter 2 - The Mother's Fury

The canvas duffel bag slipped from Evelyn’s shoulder, hitting the floor with a heavy, muted thud. The sound finally drew Vanessa’s attention, but before the arrogant mistress could even register who had just walked in, Evelyn was already moving.

She didn't scream. She didn't flail wildly. Her movement was an explosive, terrifying blur of calculated fury. Evelyn closed the distance across the massive living room in three massive strides.

With lethal precision, she lunged forward, her hands closing like vice grips around Vanessa’s ankle and calf. With one violent, upward jerk, Evelyn ripped Vanessa’s leg backward, tearing the red stiletto off of Lily’s bruised hand.

Vanessa gasped, her champagne sloshing over the rim of the glass and splashing onto the pristine marble as she stumbled backward, barely catching her balance. Her beautiful face twisted into an ugly, indignant scowl.

Evelyn didn't even look at the spilled champagne. She planted herself squarely between the mistress and her crying child. Her chest rose and fell with slow, controlled, but incredibly deep breaths. Her jaw was clenched so tight her teeth ached, and her eyes burned with a dark, restrained violence.

"Take your shoe off my daughter's hand!" Evelyn snapped. Her voice wasn't a hysterical yell; it was a sharp, venomous command that cut through the air like a blade.

Vanessa finally steadied herself. She looked Evelyn up and down, taking in the cheap, black-and-white maid uniform and the messy brown updo. A cold, condescending smirk slowly spread across Vanessa’s glossy lips. She took another slow sip of her drink, completely unbothered by the sheer rage radiating from the woman standing in front of her.
