Chapter 1 - The Thanksgiving Shift

The upscale, five-star restaurant was bathed in incredibly warm, cinematic amber lighting. The atmosphere was a breathtaking display of staggering wealth, with massive crystal chandeliers hanging over beautifully decorated Thanksgiving tables. Soft jazz drifted through the dining room as the city's most elite, untouchable families enjoyed their lavish holiday meals.

But standing by the swinging kitchen doors, completely hidden from the elite guests, a cruel, devastating humiliation was taking place.

Emma, a twenty-something waitress with her blonde hair tied in a neat updo, stood absolutely frozen. She wore a pristine black uniform and a white lace apron, holding a heavy silver serving plate. Her eyes were completely wide with sheer, unadulterated shock.

"I thought you left," Emma whispered, her voice trembling as she stared at the man sitting alone at the most expensive VIP table in the restaurant.

It was Roman.

Roman was a strikingly handsome, terrifyingly composed man in his late forties, wearing a flawless all-black suit and a dark silk tie. He was the most notorious, heavily guarded billionaire investor in the state. He had arrived alone an hour ago, ordered a glass of expensive bourbon, and hadn't touched his food.

A tight close-up captured Roman’s face. He didn't blink. He didn't look away. He remained perfectly, chillingly still, maintaining absolute, piercing eye contact with the young waitress.

"I heard you," Roman stated smoothly, his deep voice carrying a terrifying, lethal calm that cut straight through the restaurant's background music.
