Chapter 1 - The Cold Marble Lobby

The grand, luxurious American corporate lobby in downtown Chicago was a fortress of polished marble and blinding wealth. Outside the massive floor-to-ceiling glass windows, a freezing, torrential rainstorm battered the city streets. Inside, the atmosphere was completely devoid of warmth.
"You can't be in here!"
The harsh, booming voice of the corporate security guard shattered the ambient hum of the lobby. He lunged forward aggressively, his large hands grabbing the shoulder of a soaked, freezing seven-year-old girl.
Her name was Maya. She had long, wavy brown hair plastered to her cheeks by the rain, and she wore a dripping wet pink coat and muddy boots. But the little girl didn't scream. She didn't cry.
Instead, she twisted her small body violently to protect the bundle in her arms.
Clutched tightly against her chest was a tiny infant, completely silent from exhaustion, wrapped securely in a thick, fuzzy beige coat.

The tall guard in the dark suit scowled, completely disgusted by the sight of the street children dripping rainwater all over his pristine marble floor. He gripped Maya’s pink coat harder, fully intending to drag her backward and throw her directly out into the freezing, relentless storm.
👉 The brutal guard thought he was just tossing out trash, but the little girl’s next words were about to paralyze the entire room.
