Chapter 2 - The Last Drop

"Get out before I call the police," the guard snarled, shoving Maya toward the heavy revolving glass doors.
Maya dug her small, muddy boots into the polished marble. She didn't cower. Her realistic facial micro-expressions showed an incredible, unnatural bravery that no seven-year-old should ever possess. She shielded her baby sister tightly, staring fearlessly up at the towering security guard.
"I can wash dishes," Maya said, her voice completely steady and clear, echoing through the massive space.
The wealthy executives walking through the lobby stopped in their tracks.
Maya slowly raised her small, trembling hand. Pinched between her cold fingers was a plastic baby bottle. It was completely empty. With a heartbreaking, cinematic slowness, she tilted the bottle, her tiny finger touching the very last, single drop of milk clinging to the plastic rim.
"I just need milk," Maya stated, refusing to break eye contact with the hostile guard.
The guard scoffed, rolling his eyes in absolute annoyance. He raised his hand to shove her out the door once and for all.
