Chapter 5 - The Locked Study

Ten minutes later, Claire was shoved gently but firmly into Dominic’s private, mahogany-paneled study.

The heavy oak doors clicked shut behind her, the lock engaging with a terrifying, absolute snap.

Dominic was sitting behind his massive desk. He had completely removed his suit jacket and unbuttoned his vest, exposing the dark syndicate tattoos climbing up his muscular forearms. He was pouring a glass of expensive bourbon, his face a mask of cold, unyielding stone.

"She has my eyes," Dominic stated, not even looking up from his glass.

Claire completely broke down. The maternal terror hijacked her nervous system.

"Dominic, please!" Claire sobbed, the cinematic realism of her fear paralyzing her as she dropped to her knees on the plush carpet. "I'll leave! We'll pack our bags right now! You'll never see us again! Take my life, just please don't hurt her!"

Dominic froze. The glass of bourbon stopped halfway to his mouth.

He slowly set the crystal glass down on the desk. He looked at the woman weeping on his floor. The cold, terrifying mafia boss facade completely vanished, violently replaced by a dark, agonizing grief.
