Chapter 6 - The Shattered Giant

Dominic walked slowly around the heavy mahogany desk. He didn't look angry; he looked absolutely devastated.
"You thought I would hurt my own child?" Dominic choked out, his chest heaving with overwhelming emotion. "You vanished into thin air four years ago, Claire. I spent millions looking for you. I tore this entire city apart piece by piece, interrogating every single cartel, thinking a rival syndicate had murdered you."
He looked down at her, tears of pure, unadulterated shock welling in his dark eyes.
"I have spent four years grieving a dead woman," Dominic whispered. "And you were hiding as a maid in my own house."
Claire stood up, wiping the tears from her face, her maternal instincts finally overriding her fear.
"I was protecting her from your world!" Claire yelled back, her voice shaking with righteous fury. "You're a monster, Dominic! Men die around you every single day! I couldn't let my baby grow up waiting for a bullet to fly through her bedroom window!"
Dominic didn't yell back. He didn't defend his honor.
He just stared at her, absorbing the absolute, undeniable truth of her words.
