Chapter 4 - The Poisoned Champagne

To understand the absolute, volcanic tension in the luxury event hall, you had to understand exactly why Nora had brought the water in the first place.
Thirty minutes earlier, Nora had been working behind the catering bar. She had a clear view of the VIP tables. She watched the blonde woman, whose name was Victoria, pull a small, crushed pill from her diamond clutch. Victoria had quickly and discreetly dropped the powder directly into the elderly woman's champagne flute.
The elderly woman was Victoria’s extremely wealthy mother-in-law, Mrs. Sterling.
Nora knew exactly what that pill was because her own mother used to take them for severe hypertension. If mixed with alcohol, it would cause a catastrophic, immediate drop in blood pressure. To an eighty-year-old woman, it would look exactly like a natural, fatal heart attack.
Victoria was trying to murder her mother-in-law in a room full of people to inherit her husband's billion-dollar trust fund.
When Victoria handed the poisoned champagne to Mrs. Sterling, Nora hadn't hesitated. She grabbed a silver tray, filled a glass of water, and sprinted across the ballroom. She intentionally bumped into the table, "accidentally" knocking the poisoned champagne glass onto the floor, shattering it completely.
That was why Victoria had grabbed her arm. Victoria knew the waitress had ruined the assassination.
"Get my mother-in-law another glass of champagne!" Victoria had hissed at Nora right before the argument started.

But Nora had refused. She stood her ground with the water, completely willing to be fired to keep the old woman alive.
👉 Victoria thought she had bullied the waitress into submission, but the elderly woman in the wheelchair finally spoke up.
