Chapter 1 - The Floor

The opulent dining room of the multi-million-dollar suburban estate was bathed in the warm, elegant glow of a massive crystal chandelier. At the center of the room sat a massive, dark wood dining table, lavishly set for a gourmet dinner. Crystal wine glasses, fine china plates, expensive steaks, fresh salads, and warm bread were perfectly arranged across the polished surface.

But the atmosphere in the room was entirely devoid of warmth.

Standing near the edge of the dining room was an eight-year-old girl named Chloe. She had fair, rosy skin and light brown hair tied into neat braided pigtails. She wore a simple light blue dress over a white cardigan. But instead of sitting in one of the plush dining chairs, Chloe was standing awkwardly, clutching a cheap, dented metal food tray tightly to her chest.

Her large, innocent eyes were filled with heavy tears, her expression completely heartbroken.

"Can I sit with everyone tonight?" Chloe pleaded, her small voice trembling with deep, genuine sadness. "Please? I'll be quiet."

Standing tall beside the head of the lavishly set dining table was her stepmother, Evelyn. Evelyn was an incredibly elegant, sophisticated woman in her late thirties, wearing a shiny, expensive long-sleeve burgundy silk dress and beige high heels.

Evelyn didn't look at the weeping little girl with an ounce of maternal empathy. She glared at her with pure, unadulterated, and profoundly toxic disgust.

Evelyn raised her perfectly manicured hand and pointed coldly, dismissively toward the far, dark corner of the hardwood floor, right where the family’s golden retriever was quietly resting on a dog bed.
