Chapter 6 - The Arrogant Confession

Close-up: Tight shot on Evelyn.
The glamorous stepmother completely froze for a fraction of a second when she heard her husband's voice. She hadn't expected him home for another forty-eight hours. She knew she had been caught red-handed.
But Evelyn was a deeply narcissistic, incredibly arrogant manipulator. Instead of panicking, apologizing, or frantically making up an excuse about a spilled plate, she decided to double down. She genuinely believed that she had completely brainwashed Michael. She thought his corporate mindset valued strict discipline above all else, and she assumed that if she acted completely confident, Michael would unquestionably side with her authority over a weeping child.
Evelyn slowly turned her head, looking back at her husband.
She aggressively crossed her arms over her shiny burgundy silk dress, lifting her chin with a look of pure, unremorseful, and utterly indifferent entitlement. She didn't look at the little girl on the floor; she stared directly into her husband's eyes, fully expecting him to nod in agreement.
"She needed to learn where she belongs," Evelyn stated coldly, her voice dripping with toxic, arrogant superiority. "She's been misbehaving all week, Michael. She's ungrateful and spoiled. I am the lady of this house, and she needs to learn respect. I'm simply teaching her boundaries."
The silence that followed her arrogant confession was absolutely deafening. The golden retriever whined softly from the floor, sensing the terrifying, explosive tension building in the air.
Evelyn smiled slightly, waiting for her husband to commend her strict parenting.
