Chapter 3 - The Secret Abuse
Over the past six months, Evelyn’s psychological and emotional abuse had escalated into terrifying, undeniable physical neglect.
When Michael was away on business, Evelyn fired the kindly old nanny who had raised Chloe. She locked the little girl out of the main living areas of the massive house, forcing her to spend her evenings entirely alone. While Evelyn hosted lavish, incredibly expensive dinner parties for her high-society friends, drinking vintage wine and eating gourmet meals, she absolutely refused to let Chloe sit at the dark wood dining table.
Instead, Evelyn forced the eight-year-old child to eat cheap, cold leftovers off a dented metal tray, completely segregating her from the "adults."
Chloe had tried to call her father once to tell him what was happening. But Evelyn had caught her. The cruel stepmother had violently snatched the phone away, kneeling down and whispering a terrifying, paralyzing threat directly into the little girl's ear.
"If you ever say a single word to your father about how I run this house," Evelyn had hissed, her eyes dark and full of malice, "I will convince him that you are crazy. I will make him send you away to a strict, horrible boarding school across the country, and you will never, ever see your daddy or your dog again."
Terrified of losing the only parent she had left, Chloe had entirely submitted to the abuse. She suffered in absolute, heartbreaking silence, eating her cold meals on the floor, hoping and praying for her father to come home.
Evelyn believed she had completely broken the child. She believed her terrifying secret was entirely safe.
