Chapter 5 - The Discovery
Medium shot: Chloe did exactly as she was told. Completely defeated, the eight-year-old girl wiped the tears from her fair cheeks. She walked over to the dark corner of the opulent dining room and sat down cross-legged directly on the cold hardwood floor, resting her dented metal food tray awkwardly on her lap right next to the golden retriever.
Just as Chloe picked up her fork, she heard the soft, familiar click of the rolling suitcase wheels stopping in the doorway.
Chloe looked up.
Standing in the entrance to the dining room was Michael. His tall, broad-shouldered frame filled the doorway, his short brown hair slightly messy from travel.
The profound, suffocating sadness on Chloe's face completely evaporated. Her wide eyes lit up with sudden, overwhelming joy and sheer, unadulterated relief at the sight of her protector.
"Daddy!" Chloe gasped, dropping her fork onto the metal tray, entirely surprised and overjoyed by his early return.
Medium close-up: Michael stopped dead in his tracks. He didn't smile back. He didn't drop his suitcase to hug her. He stood completely frozen, his eyes darting frantically around the room, taking in the horrifying scene.
He saw the lavishly set dark wood dining table, completely covered in expensive steaks, crystal glasses, and fresh salads. He saw his elegant wife standing at the head of the table in her shiny burgundy silk dress. And then, he looked down at his beautiful, innocent eight-year-old daughter, sitting cross-legged on the floor like a discarded piece of trash, holding a metal tray.
His face shifted violently from shock to immediate, deep confusion, and finally, to intense, overwhelming protective concern.

"Why is my daughter eating on the floor?" Michael asked. His voice wasn't a shout. It was incredibly low, completely baffled, and laced with a highly dangerous, protective edge that completely altered the temperature in the room.
