Chapter 2 - The Mafia Patriarch

To understand the catastrophic, entirely fatal mistake Claudia had just made by throwing the barefoot child into the snow, one had to understand exactly whose birthday the entire mountain lodge was celebrating.
The party was for Richard Bellacorte. He was sixty-one years old, an incredibly powerful, deeply masculine, and utterly terrifying veteran Mafia boss. He was a man who commanded absolute, unquestioned loyalty through a mixture of old-school honor and devastating, surgical violence. He wore a tailored dark three-piece suit, a crisp dress shirt, a heavy gold signet ring, an expensive luxury wristwatch, a thick wool overcoat, and polished leather shoes.
Richard was the undisputed king of the family empire. A year ago, deciding it was time to step back from the daily grind of the underworld, he had officially transferred the bulk of the syndicate's legal operations and financial assets to his thirty-eight-year-old son, Mark.
Mark was Noah’s biological father. After Noah's mother tragically passed away, Mark had quickly married Claudia, claiming he needed a mother figure for the boy.
Richard had spent the last twelve months traveling overseas, expanding the family's international alliances, fully trusting his son to run the empire and protect his only grandson. Because Mark and Claudia constantly sent Richard highly curated photographs and fabricated stories about how wonderful Noah was doing, Richard had absolutely no idea about the horrific reality taking place inside the family estate.
He didn't know that the moment he boarded his private jet a year ago, Claudia and Mark had stripped the little boy of his inheritance, locking him in a dark attic room, starving him, and treating the true heir to the Bellacorte bloodline worse than a stray animal while they squandered the family fortune.
