Chapter 5 - The Coward's Excuse

Richard gently handed the heavily bundled, shivering toddler to his most trusted, elite personal bodyguard, issuing a silent, lethal command with his eyes to protect the boy with his life.

With Noah safe, Richard slowly turned and walked back out onto the freezing terrace. He bent down and carefully picked up the small, handmade wooden airplane from the snow bank, brushing the white frost off the simple red ribbon. He held the tiny, fragile toy in his large, powerful hands, staring at it with an incredibly dark, unreadable expression.

The entire entrance hall was suffocatingly silent. The wealthy guests held their breath, completely terrified by the lethal stillness radiating from the family patriarch.

Suddenly, Mark Bellacorte stepped forward from the crowd.

He was thirty-eight years old, wearing an incredibly expensive designer sweater, tailored trousers, a luxury wristwatch, and polished leather shoes. Instead of rushing forward to help his freezing, filthy son, Mark looked deeply embarrassed and intensely irritated that his perfect, high-society party had been interrupted by the child he had tried to hide.

Mark aggressively reached his hand out, completely intending to snatch the wooden toy directly out of his terrifying father's hands.

"Dad, ignore him. It’s just a small punishment," Mark said, his voice dripping with irritated, sociopathic entitlement, genuinely believing his father would side with him over a dirty toddler. "He was being completely disobedient in the kitchen. Claudia was just teaching him a lesson."

Richard didn't hand over the toy. He didn't blink.

Richard slowly, deliberately raised his head, looking directly at his son.
