Chapter 8 - The Hidden Message

Richard stood in the center of the demolished entrance hall, his chest heaving slightly under his tailored three-piece suit, his knuckles bruised, entirely surrounded by the wreckage of the people who had tortured his grandson.
He slowly looked down at the handmade wooden airplane resting safely in his massive palm.
The toy was incredibly crude, clearly carved by a small child using discarded scraps of firewood and glued together with agonizing, desperate effort. But as Richard gently brushed his thumb over the rough wood, he noticed something highly unusual etched deeply into the underside of the airplane's small wooden wings.
It wasn't a child's drawing. It was tiny, frantic, incredibly precise handwriting.
Richard pulled a pair of reading glasses from his suit pocket and peered closely at the scratched letters. His blood ran completely, terrifyingly cold.
It was a message. A desperate, final message written by Noah’s biological mother, Sarah, carved into the wood with a sewing needle just days before her "tragic, accidental" death two years ago. The little boy had completely unknowingly used the hidden piece of firewood to build his grandfather's gift.
Richard— the tiny etching read. Mark and Claudia are poisoning my food. They forged the new will. If I die, it is murder. Please, save my baby.
The staggering, horrifying magnitude of the betrayal hit Richard like a physical blow to the heart. His own son hadn't just abused his grandson; he had murdered a completely innocent woman just to steal control of the family's financial trusts. They had spent two years living in extreme, multi-million-dollar luxury entirely funded by the blood of Noah's mother.
