Chapter 2 - The Impossible Claim

The cinematic tension on the grand estate porch spiked to an absolute, breathless peak.
Arthur’s sharp jawline tightened so hard the muscles ticked beneath his dark stubble. He stared down at the freezing little girl, his highly observant, analytical mind struggling desperately to maintain his composed, stoic facade. He didn't yell. He didn't react with exaggerated panic. He displayed the restrained, heavy emotion of a man whose heart had already been broken into a million pieces.
"You're mistaken," Arthur stated firmly, his deep voice radiating a cold, impenetrable certainty. "I don't have children."
It wasn't a lie to avoid responsibility. It was the devastating medical truth he had lived with for five agonizing years. According to the top-tier fertility specialists his wife had hired, Arthur was completely, irreversibly sterile. Valerie’s recent pregnancy was supposed to be a one-in-a-million medical miracle—a miracle that had supposedly ended in a tragic stillbirth just days ago.
Mia didn't flinch. She didn't cry or back away from the intimidating, broad-shouldered billionaire.
She stood her ground on the freezing stone porch. She looked directly into Arthur’s dark eyes, completely and utterly fearless despite the howling storm crashing around them.
"Then somebody wanted you to believe that," Mia replied in a quiet, intensely serious whisper.
The profound, eerie maturity in the seven-year-old’s voice hit Arthur like a physical blow to the chest. The sheer confidence in her statement completely bypassed his logic. He looked down at the crying newborn wrapped in the clean blue blanket, and a dark, terrifying seed of doubt officially planted itself in his brilliant mind.
He couldn't leave a freezing child in the rain.
