Chapter 4 - The Gray-Blue Eyes

The grand, dimly lit room was entirely silent except for the crackling of the massive fireplace and the soft, fussy whimpers of the newborn.

Arthur held the sealed white envelope in his left hand. But before he could break the heavy wax seal, the crying infant suddenly went completely quiet.

An extreme, cinematic close-up captured the breathtaking moment. The newborn shifted beneath the warm blue blanket, turning its tiny head toward the glowing light of the fire. Very slowly, the infant opened its eyes for the very first time since entering the estate.

Arthur completely stopped breathing. The air was violently violently crushed from his lungs.

The baby wasn't looking blindly into the room. It was looking directly at Arthur. And the newborn’s irises were a striking, piercing, unforgettable shade of gray-blue.

It was an exact, flawless genetic match to Arthur’s own eyes.

This wasn't just a common eye color. The Sterling family possessed a highly distinct, incredibly rare genetic mutation that caused a specific starburst pattern of gray and blue in the iris. It was a dominant trait passed down through three generations of his bloodline.

Arthur physically staggered backward, dropping to one knee on the hardwood floor. His sharp masculine face went completely pale. His restrained, stoic composure violently shattered into a million jagged pieces.

The doctors had sworn he was irreversibly sterile. His wife had wept in his arms, swearing their child had died in her womb.
