Chapter 7 - The Surrogate's Sacrifice

"Mia," Arthur asked softly, crouching back down to the little girl's eye level. He kept his voice incredibly gentle, completely masking his homicidal fury to protect her. "Who gave you this baby? Where is your mother?"
Tears finally welled up in Mia’s brave, resolute eyes. Her lower lip trembled as the adrenaline of the night began to wear off.
"My mommy carried the baby," Mia whispered, her voice cracking. "The wicked lady in the fancy clothes told my mommy she would give us money for a house if she carried the baby for her. But tonight, when the baby came, the bad men with guns chased us in the rain."
Arthur’s chest tightened painfully. Valerie’s hitmen had actually ambushed them.
"Mommy crashed our car into the deep ditch down the road so the bad men couldn't see us in the dark," Mia sobbed, clutching the edges of her torn beige coat. "She was bleeding. She wrapped the baby in the blue blanket and shoved the papers inside. She told me to run through the woods to the big stone house and give the baby to the man with the gray eyes."
"And your mother?" Arthur choked out, terrified of the answer.
"She stayed in the broken car," Mia wept. "She stayed behind to make noise so the bad men would find her instead of us."
Arthur’s blood boiled with an apocalyptic rage. An innocent woman was currently bleeding out in the freezing storm, sacrificing her own life to protect his biological son.
