Chapter 9 - The Envelope Drops

"We'll get through this together, Arthur," Valerie whispered, reaching a delicate hand out toward him. "We just have to lean on each other. The doctors said we can try again next year."
Arthur didn't take her hand.
He reached into the inner pocket of his dark gray suit. He didn't scream. He didn't curse her name.
With a slow, incredibly deliberate motion, Arthur pulled out the stack of heavily guarded medical documents, the illegal surrogacy contract, and the printed assassination order. He tossed the entire stack directly onto the center of the plush mattress.
The papers landed heavily on Valerie’s silk-covered lap.
Valerie looked down at the documents. The cinematic realism of her absolute, unadulterated panic was breathtaking.
Her fake tears instantly evaporated. All the color violently drained from her flawless, contoured face, leaving her looking like a terrified ghost. Her perfectly manicured fingers began to tremble uncontrollably as she recognized her own signature on the black-market contract.
"Where did you get this?" Valerie choked out, her voice shrinking into a shrill, breathless squeak of pure terror.
"A little girl delivered it to my front porch ten minutes ago," Arthur stated coldly, stepping closer to the bed. "Right along with my beautiful, healthy, gray-eyed son."
Valerie let out a high-pitched gasp. Driven by pure, animalistic desperation, she lunged toward the nightstand to grab her phone, desperate to call her hitmen to storm the house and kill Arthur before he could expose her.
She didn't even reach the phone.

👉 Valerie realized she was entirely trapped, and the flashing lights outside signaled her absolute, public humiliation.
