Chapter 2 - The Fearless Child

The tension in the cedar wood study snapped like a brittle wire.
Ellie didn't scream. She didn't cry. With a chilling, completely unnatural calm, the six-year-old girl ignored the drawn weapons, ignored the terrified men, and walked directly toward the snarling, bloodthirsty beast standing over the fallen mafia boss.
Standing just outside the doorway in the grand hall was Mara. The thirty-something woman wore a crisp black and white maid uniform. Her hands flew to her mouth, her eyes widening in absolute, paralyzing horror as she watched her daughter walk into the line of fire.
"Ellie, no," Mara gasped, her voice completely breathless, her heart slamming violently against her ribs.
She tried to lunge forward to grab her child, but one of the corrupt guards aggressively shoved the maid backward, pinning her against the wall. The guards wanted the dog distracted. If the beast attacked the little girl, they would finally have a clear shot to put a bullet in the mastiff’s skull and finish their treacherous job on Damen.
Atlas let out a demonic, deafening roar as the little girl entered his kill zone. The giant red-brown mastiff lowered its massive head, its muscles coiling like a spring, preparing to launch its 180-pound frame directly at the child.
