Chapter 1 - The Black Lacquered Box

The lavishly decorated ballroom of the Chicago estate was a cinematic masterpiece of intimidating wealth and power. Massive crystal chandeliers cast a brilliant, warm light across the pristine marble floors. Two hundred of the city’s most elite, high-society attendees stood in their expensive formal wear, holding champagne flutes and speaking in hushed, respectful tones.

At the very center of the room stood Dante.

The handsome Caucasian mafia boss radiated a calm but absolutely lethal authority. He wore an unbuttoned black dress shirt that exposed a glimpse of his heavily tattooed chest. Tonight was the anniversary of his syndicate’s absolute rule over the city, and the centerpiece of the celebration was resting in his large, scarred hands.

It was a stunning, black lacquered wooden gift box, tied perfectly with a thick, dark red silk ribbon.

The entire ballroom fell completely silent as Dante reached out to untie the ribbon. It was presented as a gift from his inner c

ircle, meant to symbolize loyalty and untouchable power.

But before his fingers could even pull the silk, a sudden, frantic, high-pitched scream shattered the elegant silence.

"Don't open that box!"

Dante froze. He slowly lowered the black box onto the heavy marble table. His dark, dangerous eyes narrowed as he scanned the crowd of billionaires and politicians.

"Who said that?" Dante demanded, his voice a low, vibrating rumble that made the temperature in the room instantly plummet.

The crowd parted. Standing completely alone in the center of the dangerous room was five-year-old Sophie. She wore a frilly pink dress and a matching pink hair bow, clutching a worn plush bunny tightly to her chest. Her tiny hand was stretched out in pure, unadulterated terror.

👉 Dante’s armed guards stepped forward to remove the child, but the mafia boss's next move would paralyze the entire room.
