Chapter 10 - The Vow of Protection

The bright, sunlit kitchen was finally silent again, save for the soft, natural breathing of the terrified children.

Mr. Romano slowly holstered his weapon. He adjusted his black suit jacket, trying to compose the violent, terrifying mafia boss back into the shape of a father. He walked carefully around the dark kitchen island, stepping over the shattered mixing bowl and the spilled flour.

He knelt on the marble floor right next to the pantry.

Clara slowly pulled her arms away, allowing the three little girls to look up. Lily, the brave five-year-old who had carried the heaviest secret in the world for six agonizing months, looked at her father with massive, tear-filled brown eyes.

"He's gone, Lily," Mr. Romano whispered, his voice cracking with overwhelming, profound love. "The bad man is gone forever. You never have to be afraid again."

Lily let out a soft, shuddering breath. She stepped forward and threw her tiny arms around her father's neck, burying her face in his black shirt.

Mr. Romano closed his eyes, holding his daughter tighter than he ever had in his life. He slowly looked up over her shoulder, meeting the dark, fiercely protective eyes of the maid.

Clara had risked her own life, standing her ground against a heavily armed killer, just to translate a broken child's song.

"You aren't a maid anymore, Clara," Mr. Romano said softly, his voice carrying the absolute, unbreakable weight of a billionaire's vow. "You are their guardian. And you have the permanent, absolute protection of this family for the rest of your life."

Clara smiled, a subtle, beautiful expression of pure relief, knowing the innocent children were finally safe.

If you were Clara, would you have been terrified to translate the song to the mafia boss, or did your protective instincts override your fear?
