Chapter 3 - The Cryptic Whisper

Mr. Romano didn't look at the spilled flour. He didn't look at the mixing bowl. He stepped slowly into the bright kitchen, his dark, piercing eyes locked entirely onto his five-year-old daughter.
His face was completely rigid, his features a mask of intense, agonizing tension.
"You..." Mr. Romano whispered, his deep voice cracking under the crushing weight of his grief. He took another step, crouching down slightly to meet Lily’s eye level. "...singing?"
Lily immediately stopped swaying. The sweet, innocent melody died in her throat. Her large brown eyes darted from her father's heavily tattooed forearms to his intense, desperate face. The trauma of the past six months instantly flooded back into her tiny body. She shrank back, terrified of the overwhelming, dark energy radiating from her father.
Lily turned quickly, pressing her flour-covered face into Clara’s grey dress.
Clara instinctively wrapped her arms around the trembling child, her protective instincts flaring up. She looked at Mr. Romano, her eyes silently pleading with him to back away and give the traumatized girls some space.
But Lily didn't just hide. She reached up, gently grabbing the collar of Clara’s maid uniform. The little girl pulled the maid down to her level, pressing her tiny mouth directly against Clara's ear.
Mr. Romano froze, watching the incredibly subtle, secretive exchange.
Lily’s lips moved in a frantic, barely audible whisper. "James is so shock."
Clara’s entire body went rigid. The warmth completely drained from the maid's face, leaving her looking absolutely terrified.
