Chapter 5 - The Footsteps in the Hall

The silence inside the bright, sunlit kitchen became absolute, suffocating, and incredibly lethal.
Mr. Romano didn't scream. He didn't draw his weapon wildly. The cinematic realism of his reaction was profound—his breathing slowed, his body perfectly still as the catastrophic betrayal fully settled into his bones. His wife had been slaughtered in her own bed, and he had been shaking the hand of her murderer every single morning since.
Then, the heavy, deliberate sound of tactical boots echoed against the marble floor in the grand hallway.
The footsteps were getting louder.
"Boss?" a smooth, confident voice called out from the corridor. "I saw your car pull up. Everything okay in there?"
It was James.
Clara’s heart hammered against her ribs. She immediately shoved the three little girls behind her, pushing them into the narrow pantry space between the refrigerator and the wall, completely shielding their tiny floral dresses with her own body.
Mr. Romano didn't flinch. He slowly stood up to his full height. He looked at Clara, giving her a single, microscopic nod of profound respect. She had deciphered the trauma of his children. She had uncovered the ultimate betrayal.
"Stay behind the island," Mr. Romano whispered softly, his voice devoid of all emotion.

He unbuttoned his black suit jacket, reaching a heavily tattooed hand around to the small of his back, his fingers wrapping around the cold, textured grip of his concealed firearm.
👉 James thought he was walking into a normal kitchen, completely oblivious to the apex predator waiting to tear him apart.
