Chapter 6 - The Traitor Enters

The arched kitchen doorway darkened as James stepped into the room.
He was a tall, heavily built man wearing a sharp grey suit, looking every bit the polished, highly paid enforcer. He had a relaxed, arrogant smile on his face, entirely confident in his untouchable position within the Romano family.
"Hey, boss," James said casually, his eyes sweeping over the flour-covered dark kitchen island. "You're back early. I was just doing a perimeter check. The gates were supposed to be—"
James stopped talking.
His highly trained survival instincts flared instantly. He looked at Mr. Romano’s face. The terrifying mafia boss wasn't looking at him like a brother anymore. He was looking at him with the cold, mechanical emptiness of an executioner staring at a corpse.
James’s eyes darted to Clara, who was fiercely shielding the three little girls in the corner. He saw the pure, unfiltered terror mixed with absolute accusation in the maid's eyes.
James realized the little girl must have finally spoken.
The arrogant smile completely vanished from the traitor's face. Without a single second of hesitation, James reached aggressively into his grey suit jacket, pulling out a heavy, suppressed pistol. He aimed it directly at Mr. Romano's chest, his hands shaking with a sudden, violent adrenaline rush.
