Chapter 7 - The Confession in the Light

Mr. Romano didn't raise his hands. He didn't beg for his life. He simply stared down the barrel of the suppressed weapon, his dark eyes burning with an apocalyptic rage.
"Why, James?" Mr. Romano asked. His voice was shockingly quiet, slicing through the tension in the bright kitchen with lethal precision. "She cooked for you. She welcomed you into our home. She treated you like family."
James scoffed, taking a tense step backward toward the hallway, desperately trying to keep his weapon steady. Sweat poured down his face.
"Because you went soft, boss!" James yelled, completely abandoning the lie. The guilt and ambition he had hidden for six months finally boiled over. "You wanted to legitimize the business! You were going to shut down the ports just because your wife didn't want the girls growing up around the cartel money! You were throwing away a billion-dollar empire for a woman!"
Clara covered the girls' ears, tears of pure horror streaming down her face as the brutal, horrific truth was finally spoken out loud.
"I had to do it," James sneered, his eyes manic and wild. "I was going to take over the syndicate. I thought the kids were asleep. I didn't know the little brat was watching from the closet."
Mr. Romano’s jaw locked. Every single muscle in his heavily tattooed body tensed simultaneously.
"You looked me in the eyes at her funeral," Mr. Romano whispered, the devastating pain of the betrayal making his voice tremble. "You carried her casket."

"It's just business, boss," James growled, his finger tightening on the trigger. "And now, I have to finish the job."
