Chapter 9 - The Basement Awaits

James thrashed weakly against the island, coughing up blood, his face turning a sickening shade of purple. His eyes silently begged for the mercy he had completely denied Mr. Romano’s wife.
Mr. Romano’s finger rested heavily on the trigger. He wanted to pull it. He wanted to blow the traitor's brains all over the pristine white cabinets right then and there.
But a tiny, terrified whimper echoed from the corner of the kitchen.
Mr. Romano froze. He slowly turned his head.
Through the chaos and the floating white flour, he saw Clara entirely draped over his three little girls, shielding their eyes from the violence. They had already witnessed one murder; he absolutely refused to let them witness another.
Mr. Romano slowly lowered his weapon. He didn't remove his forearm from James's throat. He reached into his pocket with his free hand and pulled out a sleek, encrypted phone, hitting a single speed-dial button.
"Get the cleanup crew to the kitchen," Mr. Romano ordered his loyal perimeter guards, his voice devoid of all human warmth. "And open the soundproof vault in the basement. James is going to be our guest for a very, very long time."
James’s eyes widened in absolute, suffocating horror. A quick bullet to the head was a mercy compared to what the Romano syndicate did to traitors in the basement.

The heavy doors of the kitchen swung open. Four loyal, heavily armed enforcers rushed in, violently dragging the sobbing, broken traitor off the island and pulling him down the hallway into the absolute darkness of the estate’s lower levels.
