Chapter 1 - The Silent Treatment

For five agonizing years, I truly believed my husband removed his hearing aids at home because absolute silence was the only peace he had left in this chaotic world.

Every single evening, the second Dominic entered our sprawling Lake Forest estate, he would take off his expensive hearing devices and place them carefully on the marble entry console. I had conditioned myself to live entirely around his silence. I bought soft-soled slippers so my footsteps wouldn't vibrate the floorboards. I permanently kept the television on subtitles. If I needed to tell him something important, I patiently stood directly in front of him so he could read my lips, or I typed it into my phone.

I thought I was being a supportive, devoted wife to a man struggling with a severe disability.

Then, one rainy Tuesday afternoon, I unexpectedly returned home to grab a forgotten real estate contract.

Dominic’s hearing aids were resting in their usual spot by the front door. Assuming he was reading in his study, I picked them up to bring them to him.

The heavy mahogany door to his study was cracked open just an inch.

That was when I heard the low, unmistakable hum of jazz music playing from his desk speakers.

Then, I heard his best friend, Gabriel, let out a loud, booming laugh.

“Your hearing was surgically fixed three years ago, Dom,” Gabriel chuckled over the speakerphone. “You seriously still haven’t told Emma?”

I froze instantly, the small hearing aids feeling like lead weights in my hand.

Dominic answered. Not with a deaf man’s strained cadence, but in a perfectly normal, relaxed, and crystal-clear voice.

“I don’t see the point,” my husband replied.

👉 My heart completely stopped, but his next cruel explanation would violently shatter my reality.
