Chapter 10 - The Ultimate Peace

Dominic remained kneeling on the wooden porch, completely paralyzed by the brilliant, flawless trap I had built.

He had absolutely nothing left to threaten me with. His money was useless. His intimidation tactics were neutered. He was staring at the only woman who had ever truly loved him, and the child he had always desperately wanted, knowing he would never be allowed to touch either of us again.

"You wanted silence, Dominic," I said softly, looking down at his weeping face one last time. "Now you have it."

I didn't wait for him to respond.

I took a step back into my warm, safe home and slowly closed the heavy front door. The lock clicked shut with a satisfying, permanent snap.

I walked into my living room, completely ignoring the sound of him sobbing on the porch outside. I sat down in my comfortable armchair, rubbing my pregnant belly, listening to the peaceful sound of the ocean waves crashing against the shore.

A few weeks later, I gave birth to a beautiful, healthy baby boy. I didn't name him after his father. I gave him my maiden name, ensuring the Moretti legacy completely ended with the man who had betrayed me.

Dominic returned to his massive, echoing estate in Chicago, completely isolated and utterly alone. He spent the rest of his life surrounded by empty rooms, desperately wishing he could hear the sound of his son's voice.

If you were in my shoes, would you have ever let him meet the child just once, or was terminating his rights the ultimate, perfect justice?
