Chapter 3 - The Hospital Visit

I didn't cry. The woman who had spent five years tiptoeing around a silent house completely died in that hallway.

I quietly set the hearing aids back on the entry console. I walked out to my car, my hands perfectly steady, and texted my private attorney before I even put the vehicle in reverse.

Prepare the divorce papers. Immediately.

The next morning, I woke up with a singular, cold focus. I drove to Northwestern Memorial Hospital to visit Dominic’s mother, Margaret. For five exhausting years, I had managed every single aspect of her complicated life. I scheduled her specialists, organized her insurance, picked up her medications, and sat by her bed during her frequent hospital stays while her own son was "too busy" at the office.

As I approached her private VIP suite, I heard laughter spilling into the sterile hallway.

I stopped just outside the open door.

“Emma can handle the laundry, the billing, and the messy, boring things,” Margaret laughed cruelly. “That’s all she’s really good at anyway.”

Then, another, younger voice answered.

Vanessa.

Margaret’s tone instantly lowered into a warm, protective coo. “You just sit down, dear. You’re carrying my grandchild. I’m not letting you lift anything heavier than a teacup.”

I stopped breathing entirely.

Vanessa was pregnant. With my husband’s child.

“Emma has been married to him for five years and couldn’t even give him a baby,” Margaret added maliciously. “You came back into his life and gave this family exactly what it needed to secure the legacy.”

My fingers tightened around the handle of my purse. The humiliation was absolute. My mother-in-law knew. Dominic knew. They had all been laughing at the silent, barren wife while flaunting his pregnant mistress in the very hospital room I had paid for.

👉 I was about to walk away, but my cheating husband suddenly stepped right into my path.
