Chapter 4 - The Ultimatum

Dominic stepped out of the private hospital suite holding two cups of expensive coffee.

He stopped dead in his tracks the second he saw me standing in the hallway. The cinematic tension between us was absolutely suffocating. His dark eyes widened in sudden, unadulterated panic as he realized I had heard everything.

“Emma,” Dominic breathed out, his voice completely clear, completely terrified.

I didn't scream. I didn't slap him. I simply turned on my heel to walk away.

He lunged forward, his heavy hand catching my wrist with a desperate, crushing grip.

“Let me explain,” Dominic pleaded, his perfectly tailored suit wrinkling as he tried to pull me back toward him.

I looked down at his hand gripping my wrist, then looked directly into his eyes. “There’s nothing to explain, Dominic. I heard you loud and clear. Both today, and yesterday in your study.”

All the color violently drained from his handsome face. He realized his three-year charade of deafness was entirely exposed.

Before he could formulate another pathetic lie, a sharp, dramatic cry echoed from inside the hospital room.

“Dominic! My stomach!” Vanessa shrieked artificially.

Dominic froze. He looked back at the open door, then looked at me. He was caught exactly between his loyal, disposable wife and his pregnant, dramatic mistress. The hesitation lasted only for a few agonizing seconds.

But I understood completely.

“Go,” I whispered coldly.

He kissed my forehead—a sickening, patronizing gesture—and said, “Go home, Emma. Wait for me. We will fix this tonight.”

Then, he dropped my wrist and ran back into the room to Vanessa.

👉 I stood alone in the hallway, slowly opening my purse to look at the secret that would completely destroy him.
