Chapter 7 - The Discovery

It took Dominic’s expensive private investigators two weeks to track down my new address in Maine.
When he received the surveillance file, Dominic opened it, hoping to see me living a miserable, lonely life so he could swoop in and beg for forgiveness.
Instead, the first photograph in the file made his heart completely stop.
It was a picture of me walking out of a coastal grocery store. I was wearing a simple, comfortable sundress. And I was very clearly, undeniably, seven months pregnant.
Dominic’s hands began to shake violently. He dropped the file onto his mahogany desk. He quickly did the math in his head, counting back the months to the exact week I had left him.
The realization hit him like a physical blow.
When he had chosen Vanessa in the hospital hallway... when his mother had mocked me for being barren... I had been carrying his actual, legitimate child the entire time.
Panic and profound, suffocating grief hijacked his nervous system. He scrambled to his feet, grabbed his keys, and drove directly to the private airfield. He didn't care about his pride anymore. He needed to see me. He needed his real family.
He flew to Maine, arriving at my small, beautiful beachfront cottage just as the sun was setting over the water.

He walked up the wooden steps, his perfectly tailored suit looking completely out of place in the quiet, peaceful neighborhood. He raised his trembling hand and knocked on my front door.
👉 Dominic prepared to beg on his knees, but the door opened to reveal a reality he could never undo.
