Chapter 5 - The Silent Exit

I didn't go home and wait for him like a good, obedient dog.
I stood in the sterile hospital hallway and slowly unzipped my designer purse. I reached inside and pulled out a small, glossy black-and-white photograph. It was the medical ultrasound I had excitedly planned to give Dominic the night before, right before I had heard him laughing in his study.
Five weeks pregnant.
I had spent five years undergoing grueling fertility treatments, completely alone, while he pretended he couldn't hear my crying in the bathroom. I had imagined his massive, joyful smile when I finally gave him the news.
Instead, I pressed the small ultrasound picture flat against my chest, turned my back on his mother's room, and walked directly toward the elevator.
By the time Dominic finally returned to our Lake Forest estate that evening, prepared to manipulate me into staying quiet, the massive house was completely empty.
I had spent the afternoon with my attorney. I signed every single page of the divorce petition. I didn't ask for alimony. I didn't ask for a settlement. I left his expensive jewelry, his luxury cars, his millions, and absolutely everything carrying the Moretti name. I wanted a clean, immediate severance.
I packed only my personal documents, a few simple clothes, my own savings account—and the ultrasound photograph.
Before leaving the estate forever, I placed the signed, finalized divorce petition directly in the center of Dominic’s heavy mahogany desk.
I didn't leave a note explaining why. I didn't leave a letter of rage.
