Chapter 1 - The Driveway Dismissal

The massive black iron gates of the luxury estate loomed over me like a prison door.
I stood in the sweeping driveway, clutching my cheap beige suitcase. I was twenty-two, wearing a faded pink maid’s dress, a crisp white apron, and yellow rubber cleaning gloves. Tears streamed down my face, completely blurring the image of the sprawling mansion I had called home for the last two years.
Standing exactly ten feet away from me was Mr. Sterling. The thirty-eight-year-old billionaire widower wore a sharp, tailored navy blue suit. His face, usually tired but kind, was currently a mask of absolute, freezing contempt.
"Leave," Mr. Sterling commanded, his deep voice devoid of any human warmth. "And don't ever come near my sons again."
"Mr. Sterling, please," I sobbed, dropping to my knees on the hard asphalt. "I didn't take it. I swear on my life, I never stole anything from you."
He didn't believe me. He didn't even blink. He just stared at the open zipper of my beige suitcase, where his solid gold, fifty-thousand-dollar vintage Rolex was currently resting on top of my folded clothes. The evidence was damning. I had been caught completely red-handed.
Suddenly, the heavy mahogany front doors of the mansion burst open.
"Emily, don't go!"
Three identical little blonde boys, aged five, six, and seven, sprinted frantically out of the house. They wore matching pastel polo shirts, their tiny faces stained with panicked tears. They completely bypassed their father and threw themselves into my arms.
"Don't leave us!" the youngest, Leo, wailed, burying his face in my apron.
Mr. Sterling stepped forward, his jaw tightening. "Boys, get back inside the house right now. This woman is a thief."

"She's not!" the oldest boy, Julian, shouted back, standing protectively in front of me. "She protects us!"
👉 Mr. Sterling thought his son was just throwing a childish tantrum, but the terrifying truth was about to walk out the front door.
