Chapter 4 - The Betrayal

"Sir... I... I didn't put that there!" I stammered, physically staggering backward in sheer, unadulterated horror.
Mr. Sterling didn't yell. The terrifying, quiet disappointment in his eyes was a thousand times worse than anger. He slowly reached into my bag and pulled out the heavy gold watch.
"I trusted you with my children, Emily," Mr. Sterling whispered, his voice cracking with betrayal.
"I am so disappointed in you," Victoria sighed dramatically, shaking her head. "After everything this family has done for you."
I frantically tried to explain. I told him I hadn't been upstairs. I begged him to check the security cameras. But Victoria smoothly reminded him that the interior cameras had been taken offline that morning for a software update—an update she had personally scheduled.
Mr. Sterling didn't call the police, purely out of mercy for the two years I had served his family. But he ordered me to pack my things and leave the property immediately.
Which brought us back to the driveway.
I was kneeling on the asphalt, the three little boys clinging desperately to my pink uniform.
"Julian, let her go," Mr. Sterling commanded his oldest son, stepping forward to pull the boy away. "She is not a good person. She stole from us."
Julian didn't let go. The seven-year-old boy planted his feet firmly on the driveway. He looked up at his towering father, his small jaw set with an incredibly brave, defiant anger.
