Chapter 3 - The Stolen Rolex

An hour before I was kneeling on the asphalt, the house had been perfectly quiet.
I was in the laundry room, packing my small beige suitcase because Mr. Sterling had given me the weekend off to visit my mother. My bag was unzipped on the folding table.
Suddenly, Mr. Sterling stormed into the kitchen, looking frantic. He was tearing the room apart.
"Emily, have you seen my gold watch?" he asked, his voice tight with panic. "The vintage Rolex my father gave me? I left it on the master bathroom counter this morning, and it's completely gone."
"I haven't been upstairs today, sir," I replied honestly, putting down my yellow rubber gloves.
Victoria walked gracefully into the kitchen, wearing a flawless beige silk dress. She placed her hand gently on Mr. Sterling’s arm, projecting absolute, fake concern.
"Darling," Victoria purred. "I hate to say this... but maybe we should check the staff's bags? The new landscaping crew was here today. And Emily is packing to leave for the weekend."
"Emily wouldn't steal from me," Mr. Sterling frowned, looking at me.
"Of course not," Victoria smiled sweetly. "But it doesn't hurt to be thorough, right? Just to rule it out."
I didn't hesitate. I had nothing to hide. "You can check my bag, sir. It's right here."
I walked them into the laundry room. I confidently pulled the top of my beige suitcase open.
My heart completely stopped. The air violently left my lungs.
