Chapter 6 - The Secret Terror

"Yes," Julian said, tears streaming down his small face. "I was in the hallway. I saw Victoria take your watch from the bathroom. Then I followed her downstairs. I saw her put it inside Emily’s suitcase."
Victoria panicked. Driven by pure, animalistic desperation, she rushed down the front steps, her beige dress flying.
"He's a liar!" Victoria screamed, pointing a manicured finger at the seven-year-old boy. "He's just making up stories because he's obsessed with the maid! They're crazy!"
"Why didn't you tell me immediately, Julian?" Mr. Sterling asked, completely ignoring Victoria’s hysterical shrieking. He knelt down on the asphalt, looking his son in the eye.
Julian sniffled, looking terrified as he glanced at Victoria.
"Because she told us to stay quiet," Julian whispered, lifting his small arm to pull back the sleeve of his polo shirt.
Mr. Sterling’s breath violently hitched. The cinematic tension peaked.
There, on the soft skin of his son’s upper arm, were five dark, purple, finger-shaped bruises.
"She told us if we ever told you what she did when you were at work," Julian cried, "she would send us away to a boarding school where we would never see you again. Emily is the only one who stops her from hurting us."
The silence in the driveway was absolute, devastating, and terrifying.
