Chapter 1 - The Cold Refrigerator

The spacious family kitchen was bathed in warm, golden afternoon lighting, filtering through the massive windows and reflecting off the pristine marble countertops. But despite the beautiful setting, the atmosphere inside the room was suffocatingly cruel.
Lauren Whitmore stood near the center island, swaying slightly on her feet. She was thirty-four years old, wearing a loose cream dress that hung comfortably over her healing body. Small, elegant earrings caught the light as she looked down at the tiny, fragile life resting in her arms. She was deeply exhausted, having just returned from the hospital after a grueling forty-eight-hour labor. Securely against her chest was one of her newborn twin daughters, wrapped in a pale pink blanket. Her sister slept soundly in a bassinet right beside her.
Instead of a warm welcome home, Lauren was met with absolute betrayal.
Standing a few feet away were her husband, Ethan, and his mother, Beverly. Ethan, a man in his late thirties with short brown hair and a light stubble, wore a sharp dark suit, a crisp white shirt, and a silver tie. He looked entirely unbothered by his wife’s exhaustion. Beside him stood Beverly, a woman in her mid-sixties with neatly styled brown-and-gray hair, wearing a navy dress and pearl earrings. She wore a deeply satisfied, arrogant expression.
In the kitchen, two refrigerators stood side by side. One was their old, standard fridge. The other was a massive, brand-new, top-of-the-line stainless-steel refrigerator.
Ethan stepped forward, resting his hand proudly on the gleaming metal handle.
“This refrigerator is for Mom and me,” Ethan announced, his voice dripping with condescension.
A tight close-up captured Lauren’s face. She looked from the expensive new refrigerator to her husband, her expression quietly disbelieving. She had just given birth to his children, and he was dividing their groceries.
“And your daughters?” Lauren asked, her voice a fragile, hoarse whisper.
Ethan gave a small, careless shrug, adjusting his silver tie.
“Buy your own food for you and the girls,” Ethan replied coldly.
Beverly exchanged a pleased, wicked glance with Ethan, clearly proud of her son’s cruelty. Lauren took a slow, deep breath, steadying the sleeping baby against her shoulder. The profound shock evaporated, replaced by cold clarity.
“Okay,” Lauren whispered.
She reached into her pocket, taking out her phone with her free hand. She dialed a number she hadn't called in months. Her expression settled into absolute, unbreakable determination.
Ethan’s satisfied smile suddenly faded as he heard his wife speak into the receiver.

“Dad,” Lauren said, her voice dropping to a lethal, steady tone. “Bring Owen and Caleb. Before breakfast.”
