Chapter 6 - The Deed to the Palace

Ethan glared at the envelope. His arrogant facade began to crack. He slowly reached out with a trembling hand, ripped the seal, and pulled out the thick stack of legal documents.

Beverly leaned over his shoulder, her neatly styled brown-and-gray hair brushing against his suit as she tried to read the papers.

"What is this?" Ethan choked out, all the color violently draining from his face.

"That is the true deed to this estate," Arthur explained smoothly, his voice devoid of all human empathy. "Five years ago, when you thought you were qualifying for a mortgage, you were actually rejected due to your abysmal credit history. But miraculously, the next day, a private trust swooped in and purchased the property in cash, listing you as an authorized resident."

Ethan’s eyes scanned the bold legal print. His heart flatlined.

"The trust," Arthur continued, pointing a sharp finger at his daughter, "is solely owned and controlled by Lauren Whitmore. She owns the land. She owns the foundation. She owns the roof over your head. You have never paid a single dime toward this property. You are nothing but a guest."

"No!" Beverly shrieked, backing away in sheer, unadulterated horror. "That's impossible! My son is wealthy! He provides for this family!"

"He provides absolutely nothing," Lauren said softly. She stood tall beside the bassinet, her long wavy blonde hair catching the light. She looked at her husband with pure, unbreakable resolve. "I paid the property taxes. I paid the utility bills from my private accounts. I let you play the king, Ethan, because I loved you. But you are just a squatter in my castle."

Ethan stumbled backward, the legal documents slipping from his fingers and scattering across the marble floor.

"Lauren, please," Ethan stammered, realizing his entire illusion of control was completely destroyed. "We can talk about this! I am your husband!"

"Not anymore," Owen interrupted, stepping directly into Ethan's personal space. "And you aren't a businessman anymore, either."
