Chapter 2 - The Worthless Heirs

Ethan stared at his wife, a flicker of genuine apprehension crossing his handsome face before he quickly masked it with a harsh, mocking laugh.
"Calling your daddy?" Ethan sneered, crossing his arms over his dark suit. "What is he going to do, Lauren? Buy you a loaf of bread? I told you before we got married, I manage the finances in this house. You don't make a dime. If you want to eat, you figure it out."
Beverly stepped forward, her navy dress rustling, a look of profound disgust twisting her features. She looked down at the bassinet, staring at the beautiful newborn baby wrapped in a pale pink blanket as if the child were a piece of garbage.
"You should be begging my son for forgiveness, Lauren," Beverly spat, adjusting her pearl earrings. "We explicitly told you that this family needed a male heir to carry on the Whitmore legacy. And what do you give him? Two useless girls. You are a complete disappointment."
Lauren didn't scream. She didn't cry. The exhaustion of childbirth was completely overridden by a fierce, maternal adrenaline.
She looked at the two grocery bags sitting on the marble countertop. They were filled with expensive steaks, organic produce, and fine cheeses—all purchased by Ethan and intended exclusively for the stainless-steel refrigerator he had just bought for himself and his mother.
He was using food deprivation as a psychological weapon. He wanted to break his postpartum wife, to force her to feel helpless, isolated, and entirely dependent on his mercy just because she had given birth to daughters instead of sons.
"You emptied our joint checking account while I was in the recovery room," Lauren stated quietly, her eyes locking onto Ethan's. "I got the bank alert while the nurses were stitching me up."
Ethan smirked, completely unashamed. "I had to protect my assets. You’re unstable. Postpartum hormones make women crazy. Until you learn your place and apologize for failing to give me a son, your access to my money is completely revoked."
Lauren held her baby a little tighter. A cold, cinematic smile touched her lips.

"Your money?" Lauren whispered.
