Chapter 7 - The Corporate Slaughter

Ethan frantically looked at Lauren's older brother. "What are you talking about? My logistics firm is thriving! We just secured a massive round of angel investments last month!"

Owen smiled, a cold, merciless, predatory grin.

"You secured five million dollars from a venture capital group called Apex Holdings," Owen stated, crossing his massive arms over his chest. "Did you ever bother to look up who sits on the board of Apex, Ethan?"

Ethan stopped breathing. His jaw dropped in absolute, paralyzing shock. "No... no, it can't be."

"It's me," Caleb confirmed cheerfully from the other side of the kitchen island. "I am the majority shareholder of Apex Holdings. We pumped money into your pathetic, failing company strictly because Lauren asked us to keep her husband happy. We have been artificially propping up your fragile ego for five years."

The room spun wildly around Ethan. He wasn't a self-made success. He was a charity case funded entirely by his wife's secret billionaire family.

"And here is the best part," Owen whispered lethally. "Under the terms of your investment contract, the primary backers have the legal right to pull funding immediately in the event of moral turpitude or gross negligence. Which means, at 8:00 AM this morning, when you decided to empty my sister's joint bank account, we executed clause 4B."

"What did you do?!" Ethan shrieked, his voice cracking with hysteria.

"We pulled everything," Caleb answered flawlessly. "Your accounts are frozen. Your creditors have been notified. By tomorrow morning, your logistics firm will be forced to file for Chapter 7 bankruptcy. You have absolutely zero liquid assets, Ethan. You are completely, irreversibly broke."

Ethan let out a guttural, pathetic groan of despair, collapsing against the new stainless-steel refrigerator he had so proudly bought just an hour ago.
