Chapter 1 - The Deed on the Table

The loud, violent smack of heavy paper hitting the worn wooden table echoed through the modest kitchen. The natural daylight streaming over the granite countertops offered no warmth to the freezing tension in the room. Evelyn sat frozen, her dark hair pulled into a messy bun, her white button-down shirt wrinkled from days of stress and sleepless nights. Tears welled in her eyes as she stared at the thick legal folder her father had just slammed in front of her.

Standing behind Evelyn’s chair was her 60-year-old father. His face was flushed with impatience, his dark jacket pulled tight over a plaid shirt. He tapped the folder aggressively with a thick finger.

"Sign the deed, Evelyn," he demanded, his voice leaving absolutely no room for negotiation.

Across the kitchen, leaning casually against the granite counter, was Evelyn’s older sister, Chloe. Her long dark hair was perfectly styled, and she wore a pristine burgundy blouse and tailored black slacks. A sickening, smug smile played on Chloe’s lips as she watched her sister break down.

In the background, their mother stood silently in her beige cardigan, sipping coffee and watching the destruction of her youngest daughter without a single ounce of pity. Evelyn felt entirely alone, pushed into a corner by the people who were supposed to protect her.
