Chapter 5 - The Child's Defiance

Nora’s hand clamped down hard over her mother’s trembling fingers. The 11-year-old girl pulled the pen right out of Evelyn’s grip and tossed it across the kitchen. It clattered loudly onto the granite countertop.

"Nobody is signing anything," Nora said.

Her voice wasn't shaking. It wasn't loud. It was terrifyingly calm and clear, cutting through the heavy tension in the room like a sharp knife.

The entire kitchen froze. The adults stared at the young girl in the light blue sweater in absolute shock. For a child to speak up against the patriarch of this family was entirely unheard of.

Her father’s eyes narrowed into angry slits. "Excuse me, young lady?" he barked, his face flushing red again. "You do not speak to adults that way. Go to your room immediately!"

Nora didn't move an inch. She kept one hand firmly on her mother’s shoulder, anchoring Evelyn. Then, the little girl turned her head and locked her brown eyes directly onto her aunt.

Chloe rolled her eyes, letting out a loud, theatrical sigh. She looked down at the child with profound annoyance, shifting her weight in her black slacks.

"Go to your room, Nora. The adults are handling business," Chloe sneered. "Unless you have a question about how the real world works?"

"I do have a question," Nora replied steadily.
