Chapter 2 - The Stolen Sanctuary

It was Nora. Evelyn’s 11-year-old daughter stood firmly next to her mother’s chair. Dressed in a light blue sweater and faded jeans, the young girl looked incredibly small in a room full of towering, angry adults. But there was a fierce, unwavering fire in her brown eyes.
This house wasn't just a building; it was the only thing Evelyn had left. When Evelyn’s husband tragically passed away three years ago, the life insurance paid off this modest home. But because Evelyn hadn't been working at the time, her father had co-signed the original mortgage.
Now, using a ruthless legal loophole, her father was threatening to force a partition sale and leave Evelyn and Nora homeless unless Evelyn signed her equity completely over to Chloe.
"Why does she get my house?" Evelyn whispered, her voice cracking as a single tear escaped and rolled down her cheek. "I pay the taxes. I maintain it. This is Nora’s childhood home. Where are we supposed to go?"
"Oh, please, Evelyn. Stop playing the victim," Chloe sneered from across the room, crossing her arms over her burgundy blouse. "You work a dead-end job. You can just rent a cheap apartment. I actually need the capital from this equity to fund my private research clinic. My work is important."
