Chapter 4 - The Smug Sister

Chloe let out a soft, mocking laugh. She pulled her expensive phone from her pocket, scrolling through it with absolute indifference to the psychological torture happening a few feet away from her.

"Just sign it, Evie," Chloe scoffed, not even bothering to look up from her screen. "You're dragging this out. My real estate agent is coming at three o'clock to evaluate the property. I really don't want him to see you crying in your little white shirt looking like a complete mess."

The cruelty in Chloe's voice was suffocating. Evelyn looked down at her shaking hands. She was a widow. She worked 50 hours a week just to keep the lights on and put food on this worn wooden table. She didn't have the thousands of dollars required to fight her father in a brutal custody battle.

If she fought them, she might lose Nora forever.

Completely defeated, her spirit broken into a million pieces, Evelyn let out a quiet sob. She slowly reached out, wrapping her trembling fingers around the cheap plastic pen resting on top of the deed transfer.

Her father smiled—a cold, victorious smirk. Her mother visibly relaxed in the background. Chloe finally looked up from her phone, her eyes shining with absolute greed.

Evelyn pressed the tip of the pen against the signature line of the legal document.
