Chapter 1 - The Switched Envelope

The luxurious American living room was bathed in bright, pale winter daylight, perfectly decorated for a flawless family Christmas. A towering, glowing Christmas tree stood in the corner, surrounded by expensive wrapped presents and thick velvet garlands.
Nola, a hardworking twenty-nine-year-old woman wearing an emerald-green knitted sweater and dark trousers, sat on the plush sofa. Beside her sat her eighty-one-year-old grandmother, Ruth. Ruth was a sharp-minded matriarch wearing a burgundy velvet jacket and a heavy pearl necklace.
The rest of the extended family chatted happily over crystal glasses of eggnog, their conversations creating a warm, festive hum.
Ruth gently handed Nola a thick, cream-colored envelope tied with a delicate red ribbon.
"Open it, sweetheart," Ruth smiled warmly, her slightly trembling hands resting in her lap.
Nola carefully untied the ribbon and slid her finger under the gold foil seal. She reached inside, expecting a heartfelt, handwritten letter. Instead, she pulled out a generic, store-bought Christmas card and exactly five crisp, hundred-dollar bills. There was absolutely no letter inside.
Nola looked up, a soft, surprised smile crossing her face. "Five hundred dollars? Grandma, this is entirely too much. Thank you."
The warm, affectionate smile on Ruth’s wrinkled face completely vanished.
An extreme, cinematic close-up captured the absolute, world-shattering shock paralyzing the elderly woman's features. She stared at the five crisp banknotes in Nola's hand, her brow tightening with unmistakable, terrifying recognition.

"That's not what I put in there," Ruth whispered. Her voice was quiet, but it carried a chilling, absolute certainty that instantly froze the blood in Nola's veins.
👉 Ruth slowly turned her head toward the Christmas tree, and the monster she looked at made Nola stop breathing.
