Chapter 2 - The Mother's Gaslighting

The festive, cheerful hum of the family conversation faded into a suffocating, dead silence.
Nola followed her grandmother’s intense, piercing gaze across the living room. Standing perfectly still beside the glowing Christmas tree was Elaine, Nola’s late-fifties mother. Elaine wore a cream satin blouse, high-waisted burgundy trousers, and expensive pearl jewelry.
Elaine’s hand was frozen mid-air, hovering completely motionless above a silver tray of Christmas cookies.
For a microsecond, pure, unadulterated panic flashed in Elaine’s eyes as she stared at the open envelope. But with terrifying, cinematic speed, Elaine forced a bright, polished, entirely fake smile onto her face.
Elaine crossed the room quickly, her designer heels clicking sharply against the hardwood floor. She stepped directly behind the sofa and placed a heavy hand firmly onto Ruth’s shoulder.
"You're exhausted, Mom," Elaine said, her voice dripping with an overly gentle, suffocatingly sweet tone.
But Nola noticed the truth. Elaine’s fingers were digging viciously into the burgundy velvet of Ruth’s jacket, silently threatening the elderly woman to keep her mouth shut.
"I know what I packed in that envelope, Elaine," Ruth stated coldly, refusing to break eye contact with her treacherous daughter.

"Your memory is just slipping again, darling," Elaine sighed loudly, ensuring the entire room of extended family members heard her. She looked at the relatives with a fake, highly sympathetic frown. "Her dementia has been acting up all week. She gets so confused about money lately. Come on, Mom, let's get you some water in the kitchen."
👉 Nola watched her mother drag Ruth away, completely unaware of the horrifying secret waiting to be uncovered.
